Freda is UK’s first organic & eco-friendly period care subscription box.
We chatted with Freda’s founder and director Affi Parvizi-Waynethe about shedding the shame around menstruation, period poverty, self-care and much more.
Can you introduce yourself to our Betty’s!
I’m Affi Parvizi-Waynethe, founder and director of Freda, a new period care brand that provides organic tampons and eco-friendly, with a giveback pledge.
We’re sick of the societal stigma and shame around menstruation, and we want it to start being recognised for what it is – a normal, healthy, natural process.
What is period poverty?
Millions of women and girls around the world simply cannot access the essential products they need each month. In the UK alone, 1 in 10 girls aged 14 to 21 cannot afford pads or tampons, let alone pain relief.
This impacts not just their education, but their dignity.
Being in the activist space what do you do to fight against burn out? What are your favorite tips for self-care.
It’s easy to feel overwhelmed when faced with the magnitude of the problems at hand. We focus on period poverty, and even that we of course cannot end single-handedly. It’s important to remember just to do what you can – you’re at your most effective and efficient when you feel calm and well rested. I relax by running on Hampstead Heath every day.
I had a friend who ran a company in the period space and she really struggled to find investors who get her mission. Can you tell us how you got funded?
For the most part we are self-funded, and then we have an angel investor who’s helping us to develop.
Do you have any advice for people who might want to make a product in the period space?
I wish I knew that a large letter and letterbox-friendly were two different things! As a subscription service, this cost us a lot of money and wasted cardboard in the beginning when we were designing our boxes!
